Culture in the Wildschönau and surroundings

Farming heritage, old towns and Tyrolean traditions within driving distance of Niederau.

Tyrol is a region where tradition is still part of everyday life. The Wildschönau is a high valley of about 24 kilometres with four villages and roughly 260 working farms. You see them along the road: timber farmsteads, small chapels and hay barns. The valley is also known for the Wildschönauer Krautinger, a schnapps distilled from stubble turnips, for which Empress Maria Theresa granted the farmers a monopoly in the eighteenth century.

If you want to look further afield, there is plenty nearby. In Kramsach stands the Museum Tiroler Bauernhöfe, an open-air museum with about 37 relocated original buildings, including farmhouses from various Tyrolean valleys, a tiny village school, chapels, a mill and a smithy. Rattenberg on the Inn is regarded as the smallest town in Austria and is known for its glass crafts. Hall in Tirol and Schwaz tell the story of salt, coins and silver.

This page brings together the cultural outings that suit a stay in Niederau. With children, a short visit combined with time outdoors usually works best. Organisers keep their own calendars, so always check opening times, guided tours and family programmes with the organisation beforehand, as they differ by season and can change.

Tips

  • Check opening times beforehand, especially out of season.
  • Plan no more than one cultural stop a day with children.
  • Combine a visit with a walk or a terrace stop in the same place.
  • Ask the museum about a children's trail or treasure hunt.
  • Keep a museum or old town as a back-up plan for rainy days.

Combining children and culture

Children last longer when there is something to do. Choose places with a trail, animals, a treasure hunt or something to touch. The Museum Tiroler Bauernhöfe in Kramsach is a good example: children wander among about 37 relocated original buildings, from farmhouses to a mill and a smithy, and can watch Prügeltorte being baked, a Tyrolean speciality made over an open fire. Plan no more than one cultural stop a day with children, prefer a short visit to a long tour, and bring something to eat.

Rain, winter and seasons

Culture is a good plan for a rainy day or a rest day between skiing. Note that smaller museums and open-air museums sometimes have limited hours or are closed outside peak season. Rattenberg is pleasant all year round and holds a Christmas market in Advent. A visit to the silver mine in Schwaz is also a good choice in poor weather: a mine train takes you about 800 metres into the mountain. Always check current opening times and booking rules before setting off.
