Guides and practical tips
When to visit Niederau: month by month
From ski season to autumn colours: what is open and how busy it gets, period by period.
Niederau sits at 828 m in the Wildschönau and has two clear high points: winter, with the Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau ski area, and summer, with hiking, cycling and swimming. In between are quieter stretches when the valley can feel almost empty, but when you can also travel more cheaply and with more space.
This page walks through the year. For each period you can read what to expect, which facilities are open and when it gets busy. Please note that opening dates for cable cars, mountain huts and events change from year to year. The dates mentioned come from 2026 and are meant as a guide.
If you are tied to school holidays, book early: in the Netherlands and Germany the busiest weeks coincide with the Christmas, February half-term and summer breaks. If you are flexible, May, June and September to October offer the most peace and quiet.
Tips
- Book as early as possible for Christmas, February half-term and mid-August; outside school holidays it is noticeably quieter and often better value.
- Always check the current opening dates of the Markbachjochbahn and the huts; they vary by year and by weather.
- If you want peace, choose May, June or the weeks after mid-September.
- Pack layers in every season: conditions in the mountains can change quickly, even in summer.
- Check the weather forecast and snow reports shortly before departure; that is more reliable than averages.
Always check times, prices and opening dates with the provider beforehand; they can change.
December to February: peak season in the snow
This is full winter. The Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau ski area usually runs from December and through the winter, with the best snow chances in January and February. Ski schools, rental shops, toboggan runs and winter walking trails are open. Christmas, New Year and the February half-term are the busiest times: expect full lifts and slopes, and book your stay and ski pass well ahead. Outside those weeks the slopes are noticeably calmer. Days are short and nights cold, so thermal underwear and a good hat are far from superfluous. For beginners and children, the practice slopes in the valley are handy.
Advent and the weeks before Christmas
Late November and early December in the Wildschönau are atmospheric and still fairly quiet. There are Advent markets and village events, such as the Niederau village Advent, held in mid-December in 2025, and the Familienpark Drachental in Oberau offers family activities on the first Advent weekends. The Nativity Path between Niederau and Oberau can be walked from the start of Advent until Candlemas (2 February), gently lit in the evening. The ski area usually opens during December; early in the month it may still be limited, depending on snow. A good period for anyone seeking calm and a Christmas mood who does not necessarily want to ski.
March and April: spring skiing and transition
March is usually still good for skiing, with longer days and more sun. In 2026 the ski area closed around mid-April (12 April); the highest parts hold out longer than the lower slopes. The Markbachjochbahn near Niederau stopped as early as late March (22 March) that season, and dates vary by year. After Easter it quickly gets quieter: winter facilities close and the summer lifts have not yet opened. Mountain huts and restaurants may be closed, and some businesses take a short break. Easter and the Easter holidays are a busy exception. The weather is changeable, with snow up high and a chance of rain in the valley.
May and June: quiet, green and changeable
Spring is the quietest time. The Markbachjochbahn began its 2026 summer season on 9 May and then runs until mid-October, with changes from year to year. In May there may still be snow patches on the higher trails, so mountain hikes are sometimes limited; in the valley you can already walk and cycle comfortably. Not all mountain huts open immediately, and many follow during May or June, so check in advance. These months can bring plenty of rain, so pack a rain jacket. For anyone seeking peace, flowering meadows and lower prices, this is a lovely period. Whitsun brings a short busy peak.
July and August: high summer and school holidays
Now everything is open: cable car, huts, swimming pools, walking and cycling routes and the full events programme. It is also the busiest summer period, because the summer holidays in the Netherlands, Germany and Austria largely overlap. Book your stay early, especially for the peak around mid-August. In the valley it is often pleasantly warm during the day, while it is cooler on top of the Markbachjoch. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the mountains, so start walks early and keep an eye on the sky. For families with school-age children this is the most obvious time, with the most activities for kids.
September and October: autumn, Almabtrieb and Krautingerwoche
In early autumn the days are often clear and the trails quiet. During these weeks the Wildschönau runs its 'TAL Herbst' (11 September to 18 October in 2026). A highlight is the Almabtrieb, the procession of decorated cows coming down from the mountains; in 2026 it took place on 19 September in Auffach. In early October comes the Krautingerwoche, centred on the regional speciality Krautinger, with a harvest festival and markets. In 2026 the cable car still ran until mid-October; after that the valley becomes very quiet and many huts close. The autumn colours are lovely and mornings are crisp, but be prepared for mist and early snow up high.
November: the quiet month
November is traditionally the quietest month of the year. The summer cable car is closed, the ski area is not yet open, and many huts, restaurants and some accommodations take a break. It can be grey and wet, with the first snow falling higher up. If you want peace, plan to walk mainly in the valley, or combine wellness with a day trip to Innsbruck or Kitzbühel, you can do well, but expect fewer options. Check in advance what is open. At the end of November Advent begins and the winter mood returns. On average the valley is cold and damp; for temperatures, check the forecast shortly before you leave.
