Stams Abbey

A Cistercian abbey from 1273 in the Inn Valley

Stams Abbey is a Cistercian monastery founded in 1273 by Count Meinhard II of Görz-Tyrol and his wife Elisabeth of Bavaria. The abbey church holds the status of basilica minor. The building contains a princes' crypt, a richly decorated pulpit, vault and wall paintings and the well-known Tree of Life altar. Renewed museum rooms have also been open since 2017.

In summer guided tours run on most days; outside the season the offer is much more limited. Check current times beforehand. It is a quiet cultural stop in the Inn Valley, suited to teenagers and adults who enjoy art and history.
