Krautinger tasting in the Wildschönau

The regional spirit made from turnips and its story

The Wildschönauer Krautinger is a protected regional spirit from Tyrol, distilled from turnips. According to tradition, Empress Maria Theresa granted 51 farmers in the valley the right to distil it in the 18th century. Around 15 farmers still use that right today.

The turnips are sliced and pressed, the juice is boiled down to a third and fermented, and then distilled twice. Strength lies between 38 and 48 per cent. The flavour is distinctive and strongly reminiscent of vegetables. On farm-to-farm walks (Hof-zu-Hof) you learn how distilling works and can taste it. Ask the tourist office which farms welcome visitors.
