Tyrolean Folk Art Museum, Innsbruck

Masks, costumes and folk crafts in a former monastery beside the Hofkirche

The Tyrolean Folk Art Museum is housed in a former Franciscan monastery, right next to the Hofkirche and close to Innsbruck's old town. The monastery wings surround an arcaded Renaissance courtyard. The collection revolves around crafts, festivals, customs, faith and superstition in Tyrol.

Among other things you see costumes, masks, nativity scenes, historic farmhouse rooms (Stuben), textiles, glass, pottery and tools from different parts of Tyrol, plus models of former farms. Children mostly enjoy hunting for details, such as the masks; the museum occasionally runs guided tours for young and old. Allow a good hour; the museum combines well with a stroll through the city centre.
