Ambras Castle, Innsbruck

Renaissance castle with a cabinet of curiosities above Innsbruck

Archduke Ferdinand II (1529-1595) had medieval Ambras extended into a Renaissance palace as a gift for his wife Philippine Welser, a merchant's daughter from Augsburg. The castle is regarded as the oldest museum in the world and keeps the archduke's collections.

The Kunst- und Wunderkammer is the only Renaissance cabinet of art and curiosities preserved in its original location. The Spanish Hall counts among the finest Renaissance halls, and Philippine's bath has survived too. A park surrounds the castle, where children can run around after the visit. Allow about two hours.
