The Tyrolean capital with the Golden Roof, old town and a cable car up the Nordkette
Innsbruck is the capital of Tyrol, set in the Inn Valley and ringed by mountains. The city blends a historic old town with modern architecture, and the mountains begin right at the edge of the centre. For families it is one of the few places where a city day and a mountain trip fit into a single outing.
The best-known landmark is the Goldene Dachl in the old town, an oriel built for Emperor Maximilian I with 2,657 gilded copper shingles. There are also the Hofburg, the Hofkirche and the Bergisel ski jump, rebuilt in 2002 to a design by Zaha Hadid. The Nordkettenbahn takes you in three stages from the city up to Hafelekar at 2,256 m. The Alpenzoo, at around 750 m, focuses on animals of the Alps.
From Niederau, Innsbruck is a full day trip. Allow plenty of time for the drive and parking. In Advent there are several Christmas markets, including one in the old town. Check opening times and prices beforehand.
About 60 minutes by car from Niederau, via Wörgl and the A12 towards Innsbruck; parking in a car park is easiest.
Always check times, prices and opening dates with the provider beforehand; they can change.
