Hofburg Innsbruck

Imperial palace with state rooms from the era of Maria Theresa

The Hofburg at the eastern edge of Innsbruck's old town was a Habsburg residence. In the 18th century Empress Maria Theresa had it rebuilt in rococo style; that style can still be seen today.

Visitors walk through the state rooms and the imperial apartments. Most striking is the Giant Hall (Riesensaal), more than 31 metres long, with life-size portraits of Maria Theresa, her husband and their children. For children it is mainly a storytelling museum about court life; allow about an hour and a half. The Hofgarten is close by, handy for a break.
