Day trip to Germany's Berchtesgadener Land with an alpine lake and salt mine
The Berchtesgadener Land lies just across the German border, south-east of Salzburg, and is one of the best-known areas of the Bavarian Alps. The Königssee is a narrow, deep mountain lake where only electric boats operate; the trip goes to the chapel of St. Bartholomä, a well-known spot on the shore.
Other options are the salt mine, where visitors ride a mine train into the salt mountain, and the Kehlsteinhaus, reached by a special bus and a lift. It is a long day, so start early and choose two, at most three, parts; in high season expect crowds and queues.
From Niederau, Berchtesgaden is about 1.5 to 2 hours by car, depending on traffic and border queues. Drive early, park near the Königssee landing stage and book ahead where possible.
Always check times, prices and opening dates with the provider beforehand; they can change.
No; as far as is known, only electric boats of the local operator run on the lake.
