Kitzbühel old town walk

Traditional façades, churches and shopping lanes in the Gams town

Kitzbühel is best known for winter sports and the Hahnenkamm races, but its old town is worth a visit even without skis. The core lies between two parallel streets, Vorderstadt and Hinterstadt, which were once closed off by medieval gates and are now pedestrian zones. You see three-storey stone houses with oriel windows, Gothic gables and heavy overhanging eaves, plus cafés and shops.

Nearby stand the parish church of St. Andreas, built between 1435 and 1506, and the Liebfrauenkirche, whose lower part dates from the 13th century. Museum Kitzbühel tells the story of the area and of skiing. A stroll takes about two to three hours with stops. It is a calm programme for a day with poorer weather, and walking the streets costs nothing.
