Brixental and Kitzbühel Alps

Kitzbühel

Historic town in the Kitzbühel Alps, known for the Hahnenkamm race

Kitzbühel lies at about 762 metres in the Leukental, between the Hahnenkamm (1,712 m) and the Kitzbüheler Horn (1,996 m). The town received its town charter in 1271 and has a well-preserved old centre on a terrace west of the Kitzbüheler Ache, with colourful façades, narrow streets, shops and terraces.

The place is known worldwide for the Hahnenkamm ski race on the Streif, held every January. For families there is more to do in summer than the name suggests: the Hornbahn takes you up the Kitzbüheler Horn, where the Alpenblumengarten lies at around 1,880 metres, a garden of roughly 20,000 m2 with more than 300 species of mountain and alpine plants. There is also a children's climbing trail. North-west of the town lies the Schwarzsee, a natural lake for swimming and walking.

For a family from Niederau, Kitzbühel is a full day out combining town, nature and dining. It is busier and pricier than the villages in the valley; expect more traffic in high season. Check opening times and prices of lifts and attractions beforehand.
