A lively market town with Baroque houses, a climbing forest and many outings
St. Johann in Tirol lies in the Kitzbühel Alps, north of Kitzbühel. The area spans roughly 670 to 2,231 m in altitude. It is a proper small town with shops, restaurants and cafés, which makes it a good day out in less settled weather.
In the centre are Baroque houses such as the Schellhornhaus and the Schwarzinger-Haus, the Baroque parish church from the 18th century and Schloss Hohenhaus, built in the 16th century as a hunting lodge. Families can visit the Hornpark climbing forest and the Moor & More Erlebniswelt, where you learn about the plants and animals of a bog. The Knödelfest (dumpling festival) is also well known.
In summer there are about 200 km of walking trails; in winter St. Johann has its own ski area. From Niederau it is a manageable day trip through the Brixental and across the Kitzbühel Alps. The town offers plenty of places to eat, which is handy if your group has different wishes. Check the opening times of attractions beforehand.
About 55 minutes by car from Niederau: via Oberau to Wörgl, then through the Brixental towards Kitzbühel and St. Johann.
