Jochberg
A mountain village between Kitzbühel and Pass Thurn with an old copper mine
Jochberg lies at about 924 m in the heart of the Kitzbühel Alps, halfway between Kitzbühel and Pass Thurn (1,274 m). It is a village shaped by farming and tourism and is quieter than its famous neighbour.
In summer there is a forest pool on the edge of the village and more than 60 km of marked hiking trails. A cable car takes you to the Kupferplatte show mine, where copper was mined 3,000 years ago; above ground you can follow the Miners' Path. St. Michael's Church is Jochberg's oldest church and has paintings by Simon Faistenberger. An hour's walk leads to the Sintersbach waterfall.
In winter Jochberg belongs to KitzSki and is linked via the Resterhöhe with the Kitzbühel-Kirchberg ski area. From Niederau it makes a pleasant day trip through the Brixental, with the mine and the mountain as highlights. For the mine tour it is wise to book ahead and bring a warm jumper, as the tunnels are cool. Check the current cable car times.
