Pertisau

Village on the western shore of Lake Achensee, at the foot of the Karwendel

Pertisau lies at about 952 m directly on Lake Achensee, the largest lake in Tyrol. Behind the houses rise the mountains of the Karwendel, Austria's largest nature park. The village is small, with around 750 residents, but it welcomes many visitors and is well set up for holidaymakers.

For a day trip from Niederau, Pertisau is mainly worth visiting for the water and the views. A boat trip with the Achenseeschifffahrt, which has sailed since 1887 and calls at several stops along the shore, goes nicely with a walk beside the lake. Nearby you will also find the shale oil museum, which explains the old extraction of Tyrolean shale oil.

It is a quiet destination with plenty of space to be outdoors. In summer you can hike, cycle and enjoy water sports; in winter cross-country skiing and winter walks take centre stage. Expect a fairly long drive, so plan a full day. Families with children will find an easy-to-navigate setting with a beach, a boat trip and short walks that are manageable even with young children.
