Inn valley

The broad main valley of Tyrol with Innsbruck, Hall, Schwaz and Wörgl.

The Inn valley is the broad main valley of Tyrol, where many people live and the main roads run. Towns along the Inn include Wörgl, Jenbach, Schwaz, Hall in Tirol and Innsbruck. The Wildschönau, the Zillertal and the Alpbachtal are all side valleys of it.

For families it is a good region for day trips. Innsbruck has an old town centre, museums and mountain railways close to the centre. Hall in Tirol is smaller and cosy, with a medieval core; the town grew rich on salt and gained the right of coinage. Schwaz is known for its silver mine, where a mine train takes you about 800 metres into the mountain. Wattens, about 20 kilometres east of Innsbruck, has the Swarovski Kristallwelten. Distances between these places are short.

From Niederau, Wörgl is roughly a quarter to half an hour by car and Innsbruck about an hour. That makes the Inn valley a handy base for combining several destinations. The motorway can be busy; a vignette is needed for Austrian motorways (in 2026 a 10-day vignette costs € 12.80), so ask about the current rate and traffic information.
