Hasegg Castle and Hall Mint
Summer The cradle of the thaler and the dollar in Hall in Tirol
Inn valley
Medieval town of salt and coins, with Hasegg Castle and a mining museum
Hall in Tirol lies on the Inn, at about 560 m and a little east of Innsbruck. The town grew wealthy on salt, mined in the Halltal from the 13th century, and on the mint established here in the mid-15th century. The old town is regarded as the largest preserved medieval centre in western Austria.
The narrow, winding streets are lined with colourful patrician houses and Gothic and Baroque churches. Above the town stands Hasegg Castle with the Münzerturm and the coin museum; this is where the Taler was struck, the coin that served as a model for the dollar. The mining museum in the centre introduces children to salt mining through tunnels, tools, minerals and a slide.
Hall makes a relaxed town day, easily combined with Wattens or Innsbruck. The centre is simple to explore on foot. Guided tours of the old town and the mining museum run on set days; ask the tourist office for current times beforehand.
About 50 minutes by car from Niederau, usually via Wörgl and the A12 towards Innsbruck (Hall exit).
Always check times, prices and opening dates with the provider beforehand; they can change.
