Village at the southern end of Lake Achensee with steam railway and Rofan cable car
Maurach lies at the southern end of Lake Achensee, at around 950 to 970 m . The village is close to the Inn valley, which makes it the easiest village on the lake to reach. It is known for the Achensee steam cog railway, which runs from Jenbach to the lake, and for the Rofan cable car.
The cable car takes you up to about 1,840 m in a few minutes, the starting point for many hikes in the Rofan mountains. At the top station you will also find the AIRROFAN, a flying attraction for those who like speed. In summer the cable car makes outings with children easy, since you do not have to climb first. Down below there is the Erlebnispark Maurach with a high ropes course and a giant swing, and the shallow beaches at Buchau.
In winter the Rofan is a small ski area with about 11 km of slopes, a 1.5 km toboggan run and a marked winter walking trail. The Notburga church from 1718 is one of the finer baroque churches in Tyrol. From Niederau, Maurach is an easy day to plan, especially for families who want to combine mountain and lake.
About 60 minutes by car from Niederau: via Wörgl on the A12 to the Wiesing/Achensee exit, then about 7 km on the B181 to Maurach. Bus 8332 runs from Jenbach station.
Always check times, prices and opening dates with the provider beforehand; they can change.
You reach the top station at about 1,840 m in roughly 5 minutes. In winter the cable car runs daily; check current times beforehand.
By train to Jenbach, then bus 8332 to Maurach, about half an hour. From Niederau, a journey with several changes takes noticeably longer than by car.
