Angath

Small Inn valley village near Kufstein with a rich river-shipping past

Angath is one of the smallest municipalities in the Kufstein district: under 3.5 km² in area, set on the Inn in the lower Inn valley. It is not a tourist hub but a quiet farming village, with the Kitzbühel Alps rising on one side and the valley floor on the other.

The village has a surprising past. In the 15th and 16th centuries Angath was a centre of Tyrolean river shipping and boatbuilding; together with Hall in Tirol and Langkampfen it was one of the three main ports in Tyrol. The parish church of the Holy Spirit, on the southern edge of the village, is first mentioned in 1220 and took its present Baroque form in 1746-47.

Nearby, at about 1,520 m, lies the Hundalm, home to the Buchacker ice and dripstone cave (also called the Hundalm ice cave). The cave belongs to the neighbouring municipality of Angerberg and can only be visited in season, so check opening times and the route beforehand. Angath suits families who want a short, quiet outing with a touch of history, combined with a cycle ride or walk along the Inn.
