Achenkirch

Village at the northern end of Lake Achensee, with lake, mountains and cross-country skiing

Achenkirch lies at about 930 m at the northern end of Lake Achensee. It is one of the villages around the lake and already close to the German border. The village has a baroque parish church, the Anna chapel on a hill and the Sixenhof, a local history museum first mentioned in 1361.

For a day trip from Niederau, Achenkirch is a distant but varied destination. In summer everything revolves around the water and the mountains: swimming, paddleboarding, sailing, windsurfing, hiking and cycling. Between Achenkirch and Maurach there is a high ropes course for those who like to climb. In summer there are also concerts by the local brass band.

In winter the area is particularly attractive for cross-country skiers, with many kilometres of trails in the region around Lake Achensee. The nearby Christlum ski area is geared towards families. Expect a long drive and check the weather, as the day is more pleasant with a firm plan, especially with children. The village suits families who like nature and quiet best.
