Hasegg Castle and Hall Mint

The cradle of the thaler and the dollar in Hall in Tirol

Hasegg Castle in Hall in Tirol was first mentioned in 1306 and traditionally protected the salt works, the river traffic and the crossing over the Inn. In 1477 the princely mint moved from Merano to Hall, and in 1486 the first silver thaler was struck here. The word dollar goes back to the thaler.

The castle houses the Museum Münze Hall, covering more than five hundred years of minting history and the technology of striking coins. From the 45-metre Münzerturm you have views over the old town and the Karwendel; the tower also holds the world's largest silver thaler. The museum suits children who like to try things out.
