Imst

A town in the Upper Inn Valley with gorge, mountain lifts and carnival tradition

Imst lies at about 827 m in the Upper Inn Valley, on the edge of the Lechtal Alps, with the Muttekopf (2,774 m) as its local mountain. It is a proper town with an old centre and the gateway to a large outdoor area with eight surrounding villages.

The centre has the parish church of Maria Himmelfahrt, with the tallest church tower in Tyrol (84.5 m). The Haus der Fasnacht explores the Imst Schemenlaufen, an old carnival tradition. From the centre the Rosengartenschlucht begins, a gorge with clear water that is free to enter from May to October.

For families the Alpine Coaster at the Imst mountain lifts is a big draw: at around 3.5 km one of the longest in the Alps, and open all year. Imst is a long drive from Niederau, but combines well with a day in the Upper Inn Valley. For the Alpine Coaster, pick a quieter day if you can, as it may be busy in fine weather. Check opening times and any age or height limits with the mountain lifts beforehand.
