Boat trip on Lake Achensee
Summer A cruise between the Karwendel and Rofan mountains
Inn valley
Railway town in the Inn valley, gateway to the Achensee and Zillertal.
Jenbach lies at about 560 m in the Inn valley, between the Karwendel and Rofan mountains. It is an important railway junction and is known as the only station in Europe with three different track gauges. Two historic narrow-gauge lines start here.
The Achenseebahn is a steam rack railway of about 7 km that has climbed to the shore of Lake Achensee, at around 930 m, since 1889 and, according to the sources, runs from May to October. The Zillertalbahn has run into the Zillertal since 1902, in summer also with historic steam trains. Above the village stands Schloss Tratzberg, a well-preserved Renaissance castle with a painted courtyard.
For families staying in Niederau, Jenbach makes a fun combination of a train outing with Lake Achensee. Plan ahead: timetables and seasons vary and change, so check current details. A steam-train ride takes up part of the day, so it is best combined with one other destination. Tickets and times are best checked in advance, especially in peak season. Those arriving by car can usually find parking near the station.
About 30 minutes by car from Niederau, roughly via Wörgl and the Inn valley motorway (A12).
Always check times, prices and opening dates with the provider beforehand; they can change.
