Old mining town in the Inn valley with silver heritage and a show mine.
Schwaz lies at just over 530 m in the Inn valley and is the centre of the Silberregion Karwendel. In the 15th and 16th centuries it was one of the largest mining towns in Europe, thanks to silver and copper. Around 1500 most of Europe's silver reportedly came from the mines here.
The Silberbergwerk is the best-known sight: a mine train carries you about 800 m into the mountain, followed by a tour that classically lasts around 90 minutes. High above the town stands Freundsberg Castle, built around 1150, with a museum on the town's history. In the centre the large parish church with two bell towers stands out.
For families staying in Niederau, Schwaz makes a good day trip combining history and hands-on experience, also in less settled weather. Bring warm clothing for the mine and check opening times and age advice beforehand. The mine stays about equally cool all year, a welcome change even on hot summer days. For very small children it is wise to ask beforehand whether the tour is suitable.
