Silver mine Schwaz

By mine train into the mountain

In the late Middle Ages Schwaz was one of Europe's largest mining towns. Silver was extracted around the town, and a large share of the silver traded at the time came from here. Today the Silberbergwerk is a visitor mine.

A mine train takes you about 800 metres into the mountain, after which you continue on foot with a guide through galleries where miners worked in the dark for centuries. A tour takes about an hour and a half. It is around 12 degrees in the mine all year, so bring warm clothing and sturdy shoes. That makes it a good outing for a hot summer day or a rainy one.
