From central Innsbruck to over 2,200 m in a short ride
The Nordkette cable cars link the centre of Innsbruck with the mountain range above the city. You travel in stages: first the Hungerburgbahn, a modern funicular with stations designed by Zaha Hadid, then the cable cars to the Seegrube and on to the Hafelekar at over 2,200 m. The lines have been running since 1928.
At the top you get a wide view over the city and the Inn valley, with mountain restaurants at the Seegrube and walking paths along the rock faces. In summer it is clearly cooler up there than in town. The trip fits well into a day in Innsbruck, for instance combined with the Alpine Zoo near the Hungerburg station, for which a combination ticket exists.
Place: Innsbruck
From Niederau it takes about 50 minutes by car to Innsbruck (via the A12). The valley station is in the city centre and easy to reach on foot or by public transport; parking in town can be busy and costly.
Always check times, prices and opening dates with the provider beforehand; they can change.
The route ends at the Hafelekar, at over 2,200 m, with an intermediate stop at the Seegrube.
