Ellmi’s Zauberwelt, Ellmau
A fairy-tale adventure world on the Hartkaiser
Activities
Fun parks, experience venues and outings that fill a day for the whole family.
Besides skiing, hiking and swimming, families often want an outing that is simply fun. In the Wildschönau itself lies the Familienpark Drachental, which according to the operator is open all year, with an alpine coaster (the Drachenflitzer), an 18-hole adventure golf course and a 5D cinema among its attractions. It is a good plan for an afternoon when the mountains are less inviting.
Further afield other family destinations await. Near Söll, at the foot of the Hohe Salve, lies the Hexenwasser, an adventure trail with playful stations for children and adults. In Wattens, east of Innsbruck, the Swarovski Kristallwelten are among the most visited attractions in Austria, and in Schwaz a mine train takes you into the mountain. The offer ranges from simple and natural to commercial and extensive.
When choosing, it helps to start from the children's ages: toddlers like space, animals and play areas, older children and teenagers tend to prefer something active or spectacular. Be realistic about time, because a day out starts with the drive. Check opening times, prices and weather dependence with the provider beforehand, as these change regularly.

Many attractions work best in dry weather, others in rain. Always keep a plan B, such as an indoor venue or a museum. An alpine coaster such as the Drachenflitzer at the Familienpark Drachental, or an adventure trail like the Hexenwasser in Söll, is most fun in clear weather. Some places have height or age limits, for example on slides, climbing elements or rides. Read these in advance to spare the children a disappointment. A picnic or lunch on the way often makes the day easier.
In holiday periods it can be busy, especially in fine weather. Setting off early helps against traffic and queues. In the Wildschönau, guests of many accommodations receive the Wildschönau Card, with benefits such as use of cable cars, museum entry and, in summer, the public swimming pool; ask at your accommodation what is part of your stay. Prices and opening times vary from year to year, so do not fix your budget too early and check the provider's website before you leave.

Yes, think of museums, indoor pools, experience venues with a roof or a visit to an old town. Check beforehand whether the venue is open in poor weather.
For most attractions this is not necessary. For special programmes or in busy weeks a reservation may be needed.
