Hintertux Glacier

Glacier visit and skiing on snow, even in midsummer

The Hintertux Glacier at the head of the Tuxertal is one of the few places in Austria where you can ski all year round. In summer part of the slopes on the glacier are open, high enough for snow to remain. Even if you do not ski, you can ride the cable cars up for the view over the icy landscape.

A well-known sight is the Natur Eis Palast, an accessible glacier crevasse at about 3,250 m with ice crystals and frozen waterfalls, where the temperature stays around freezing. The entrance is a few minutes' walk from the top station of Gletscherbus 3. A day here makes a special change during the summer holiday, but it does call for the right clothing.
