Glacier village at the head of the Tuxertal, with skiing all year
Hintertux is the highest village in the Tuxertal, a side valley of the Zillertal near Mayrhofen. It belongs to the municipality of Tux and lies at the foot of the Hintertux Glacier. This glacier ski area stretches between roughly 1,500 and 3,250 metres and is promoted as a glacier ski area where you can ski all year round.
There is something here for non-skiers too. The Gletscherbus 3 takes you high into the mountains, close to the Natur Eis Palast at 3,250 metres. In this natural glacier crevasse the temperature stays around 0 degrees, with ice stalactites, large ice crystals and a glacier lake. Guided tours are offered. At the Spannagelhaus begins the Spannagelhöhle, said to be the largest rock cave in the Central Alps. The Tuxertal also has plenty of walking routes, including themed trails for children, known as the TUX-Welten.
For families staying in Niederau this is a longer day trip of about an hour and a half by car each way. Take warm clothing and sturdy shoes: it is cold on the glacier even in summer. Check the glacier lifts' operating times and the weather beforehand, and consider a stop in Mayrhofen on the way.

From Niederau
About 95 minutes by car from Niederau: via Wörgl, along the A12 to the Zillertal exit, through the Zillertal to Mayrhofen and then up the Tuxertal to the head of the valley.
