Municipality in the Tux valley with Lanersbach and the Hintertux Glacier
The municipality of Tux lies in the Tux valley, a side valley of the Zillertal that branches off at Mayrhofen. It consists of five villages: Vorderlanersbach, Lanersbach, Juns, Madseit and Hintertux. Lanersbach and Vorderlanersbach sit on a sunny plateau at about 1,300 metres. From Mayrhofen to Hintertux the road climbs roughly 850 metres.
The valley is best known for the Hintertux Glacier, described as Austria's only year-round snow-sure ski area. Hintertux also has a thermal spa fed by mineral springs. In summer the valley is a base for walks, with a nature trail along the Tuxbach, canyoning and climbing courses for children and adults, among other things.
From Niederau it is a considerable drive, so plan a full day. It suits families who want reliable snow or who want to go a little higher into the mountains in summer. The tourist office is Tux-Finkenberg; check current opening times and lift and spa prices beforehand. Allow plenty of time for the drive through the valley, as traffic in the Zillertal can be busy in high season and at weekends; an early start is best.

From Niederau
About 70 minutes by car from Niederau (Lanersbach; Hintertux about 10 minutes further): via Wörgl and the A12 to Jenbach, along the Zillertal to Mayrhofen and into the Tux valley.
