Schlitters

Quiet village on the Ziller with a bathing lake and the Zillertalbahn

Schlitters sits in the lower part of the Zillertal, beside the Ziller river at roughly 548 m. It is a small village of a little over 1,400 residents, first mentioned in records as early as the year 936. The valley is still wide and sunny here, with gently sloping, wooded hillsides on either side.

The village is not a big tourist hub, and that is part of its appeal. At the bathing lake, a leisure area of just over two hectares with a water surface of about one hectare, children can swim and play; there is also a playground and room for tennis, football and mini-golf. The parish church of St Martin dates from around 1500 and makes a quiet stop for anyone who wants to see the village itself.

From Niederau, Schlitters is an easy half-day outing. It suits families with younger children looking for a relaxed afternoon by the water, and cyclists who want to ride a stretch of the Zillertal cycle path. You can combine it with a visit to one of the larger towns further up the valley.
