Village with a Way of the Cross, baroque church and game park on the Höhenstraße
Ried im Zillertal lies at about 573 metres in the middle section of the valley. It is a quiet village and a good base for walking and cycling, Nordic walking and climbing. Ried is also on the Zillertalbahn, which still sometimes runs with steam locomotives.
Two sights stand out. The late-baroque parish church of John the Baptist (1773-1779) has fine ceiling paintings and richly decorated altars. The Way of the Cross runs from the Riedbachbrücke to the Riedbergkapelle; its fourteen stations were carved by the regional artist Herrmann Wildauer and then cast in bronze.
For families there is the Schönblick game park along the Zillertaler Höhenstraße at about 850 metres, with a playground. Nearby are also the Erlebnistherme in Fügen, the Aufenfeld leisure area, the natural bathing lake in Schlitters and the adventure park in Kaltenbach. From Niederau, Ried is therefore a handy base for a varied day in the Zillertal. Allow plenty of time for the drive through the valley, as traffic in the Zillertal can be busy in high season and at weekends; an early start is best.
