Quiet Zillertal village with a castle, camping and the Höhenstraße
Aschau im Zillertal lies in the middle section of the Zillertal at about 560 metres. The village belongs to the Erste Ferienregion im Zillertal, known for its family-friendly offering. The Zillertalbahn, a narrow-gauge railway from 1902 between Jenbach and Mayrhofen, stops in the village.
Its best-known buildings are the late-classical parish church Maria vom Siege and Aschau Castle on a hill, with views over the valley. In the centre there is an access point to the Zillertaler Höhenstraße, a 48-kilometre panoramic road that is also a starting point for walks and cycle rides. Aschau is also known for its campsites, counted among the better ones in Europe.
A traditional event in the area is the Zillertaler Gauderfest. From Niederau, Aschau makes a good half or full day: combine a ride on the Zillertalbahn with a walk or a visit to nearby villages. In winter the ski areas Hochzillertal-Hochfügen and Zillertal Arena are close. Allow plenty of time for the drive through the valley, as traffic in the Zillertal can be busy in high season and at weekends; an early start is best.
