Zillertal
Finkenberg
Village at the entrance to the Tux valley, close to Mayrhofen
Finkenberg lies about three kilometres south-west of Mayrhofen, right where the Tux valley branches off from the main Zillertal. The village sits between the foothills of the Penken and the Grinbergspitzen and is the second-largest municipality in the Zillertal by area. Its territory stretches from roughly 850 to well over 3,200 metres.
It is quieter than Mayrhofen, while the bustle of the Zillertal is only a short hop away. Finkenberg is a member of the Zillertal Alps Nature Park, which makes it a good starting point for walks in protected mountain scenery. Of historical interest are the parish church of St. Leonhard, built in 1721, and the old Hochstegbrücke bridge.
From Niederau it makes for a long day trip, but it combines well with Mayrhofen or a visit to the rest of the Tux valley. It suits families who want a mountain day in a more traditional village, and in winter those who want to look at the ski areas around Mayrhofen or the Hintertux Glacier. The tourist office for Finkenberg is the Tux-Finkenberg association. Allow plenty of time for the drive through the valley, as traffic in the Zillertal can be busy in high season and at weekends; an early start is best.
