The Hintertux Glacier, at the end of the Tuxertal in the Zillertal, is worth a visit in summer too. The glacier lifts take you to well over 3,000 m, into a landscape of ice and rock that contrasts sharply with the valley. Skiing on the glacier is not always offered in summer; it depends on snow conditions.
A special stop is the Natur Eis Palast near the top station of the Gletscherbus 3, a system of natural ice caves with ice crystals and a glacier lake. The temperature there hovers around freezing. For families it is mainly a day of experiencing the high mountains; expect cold, even when the valley is warm.

Practical
Hintertux is about 1 hour 15 minutes by car from Niederau, via Wörgl and the Zillertal. Allow extra time for the ride up and check the current operating times. The Gletscherbus 3 reaches about 3,250 m and generally runs from mid-May to early October.
