Winklmoosalm and Dürrnbachhorn
Mountain walks above Reit im Winkl, just over the German border
The Winklmoosalm lies in the Chiemgau Alps above Reit im Winkl, just across the border in Bavaria, at more than 1,100 metres. In summer it is a starting point for hikes and mountain-bike tours. The walk to the Dürrnbachhorn (1,776 m) is regarded as fairly easy and is doable with children.
A single-seat chairlift from 1959 links the alp (about 1,190 m) with the upper area at about 1,610 m, so you can ride up and walk down, or the other way round. There are mountain huts on and around the alp for a break. The ridge beyond the summit does call for sure-footedness and a head for heights.

Practical
From Niederau it is about 1 hour 10 minutes by car to Reit im Winkl, via Kufstein and Kössen. Ask beforehand about the access road to the alp and whether the lift runs in summer.
