Quiet village in the Kaiserwinkl, close to the German border
Kössen lies at about 588 metres in the Tyrolean Kaiserwinkl, in the far north-east of Tyrol close to the Bavarian border. It is regarded as the main village of the Kaiserwinkl, which since 2005 also includes Walchsee, Rettenschöss and Schwendt under one tourism brand. The village sits in a broad valley surrounded by mountains and meadows.
In summer you can walk and cycle here. The Unterberghorn (about 1,773 m) is known as one of the places in Tyrol for paragliding and hang gliding thanks to its good thermals. A well-known walk is the roughly four-kilometre Schmugglerweg at the Klobenstein. Close by lies the Walchsee, where the water in summer is typically between 20 and 24 degrees and you can swim, sail and go boating.
In winter the family ski area of Hochkössen offers around 22 km of slopes, alongside cross-country trails, winter walking paths and snowshoe routes. For a family from Niederau, Kössen is a longer day trip of just over an hour's drive, suited to those seeking peace and quiet. Check opening times and the weather beforehand.
