Walchsee lies at about 670 m in the Kaiserwinkl, a corner of the Kufsteinerland between the Zahmer and Wilder Kaiser mountains, close to the German border. The village sits on a lake of roughly 100 hectares that often reaches 24 degrees or more in summer, making it one of the warmest swimming lakes in Tyrol.
Around the water there are sunbathing lawns, a playground, a beach volleyball court, cafes with terraces and an aqua park with, among other things, a water trampoline. You can also row, surf and fish. Right next to the lake lies the Schwemm, at more than 65 hectares the largest continuous moor in North Tyrol, a quiet spot for a walk.
For families staying in Niederau, Walchsee is above all a summer swimming day. The atmosphere is that of a small, easy-to-navigate village. Winter is quiet, with cross-country skiing, snow walking, sledging and some skiing nearby; check current conditions beforehand. In peak season it is wise to arrive early, as the best spots by the water fill up quickly. A picnic, towels and sun cream complete the day.
