Ellmau lies at about 820 metres in the Sölllandl, on the sunny south side of the Wilder Kaiser. It is a tourist village with plenty of accommodation and a wide view of the steep rock faces. German-speaking visitors know Ellmau above all as the setting of the TV series Der Bergdoktor; in summer, tours of filming locations are organised on set days, roughly every other Tuesday.
In winter the Ellmau-Going lift gives access to the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental, with around 284 km of slopes in total. At the top station of the Hartkaiserbahn, a ten-seater gondola since 2015, you will find Ellmis Zauberwelt in summer: a play world for children with trampolines, swings, a castle with a slide, a maze and water features. Walkers can go from the Wochenbrunner Alm to the Gruttenhütte.
The Kaiserbad swimming pool and a 27-hole golf course are also in the village. For a family from Niederau, Ellmau is a lovely day trip to see the Kaiser mountains without driving far; it is quieter than Kitzbühel. Check the current opening times of cable cars and huts beforehand.
