Kufsteinerland and Wilder Kaiser

Kufstein fortress, the Wilder Kaiser mountains and lakes for swimming.

The Kufsteinerland lies at the German border, north of the Wildschönau, along the Inn. The town of Kufstein is known for its fortress on a rock above the town and is also easy to reach by train, including from Germany. There are also villages such as Söll, Ellmau, Going, Walchsee and Thiersee, and lakes where you can swim in summer.

The Wilder Kaiser is a distinctive limestone range with sharp peaks. It looks rugged and attracts hikers, climbers and cyclists. In winter part of it, with villages such as Ellmau, Going and Söll, belongs to the SkiWelt. Near Söll, at the foot of the Hohe Salve, lies the Hexenwasser, an adventure trail for families. For families the lakes and short walks are often the most suitable, while higher routes require more experience.

From Niederau the Kufsteinerland is roughly half an hour to three quarters of an hour by car, depending on destination. That makes it a fine day trip, for example combining a visit to the fortress with a lake. Check opening times and the weather forecast before you leave.
