Kufsteinerland and Wilder Kaiser
Town on the Inn with an imposing fortress and a pleasant centre.
Kufstein lies at about 500 m on the River Inn, close to the German border, at the foot of the Kaiser mountains. With roughly 18,000 inhabitants it is the second-largest town in Tyrol and the main town of the Kufsteinerland. Its skyline is dominated by Kufstein Fortress, standing on a rock about 90 m above the Inn.
The fortress is more than 800 years old and houses a museum and the Heroes' Organ in the Bürgerturm, an organ from 1931 known as the largest open-air organ in the world. It is played every day at 12 noon. According to the fortress website the grounds are open daily; the organ season runs from April to October. Check current times and prices beforehand.
For families staying in Niederau, Kufstein makes a good day trip: fortress, old town and the Inn embankment are easy to explore with children. The Kaiser mountains behind the town offer walking options. Parking in the centre can be busy, so allow some extra time. Allow half a day to a full day, depending on how much you want to see. When it rains, the fortress museum is a good alternative.
About 35 minutes by car from Niederau, roughly via Wörgl and the Inn valley motorway (A12).
Always check times, prices and opening dates with the provider beforehand; they can change.
