Quiet valley near Kufstein, known for its Passion Play.
Thiersee is a municipality in a green, rolling valley south-east of Kufstein, close to the Bavarian border. By area it is the second-largest municipality in the Kufstein district and consists of scattered hamlets such as Landl, Hinterthiersee and Vorderthiersee, with farms, meadows and woodland.
The village is best known for the Thiersee Passion Play. In 1799 the residents vowed to perform the suffering and death of Jesus to protect their valley from the hardships of war. The play has been staged ever since, nowadays every six years at the Passionsspielhaus; the next edition is planned for 2028.
The valley also holds the small Lake Thiersee, a natural swimming lake at the foot of the Pendling. For families staying in Niederau, Thiersee suits a calm walk or bike ride, possibly combined with Kufstein. In winter there is cross-country skiing and snow walking. The area is not a busy tourist hotspot, which makes it ideal for a relaxed day with children. Take sturdy shoes for a walk and check the weather beforehand.
