Kufsteinerland and Wilder Kaiser
Pilgrimage village with a medieval castle and museum between Wörgl and Kufstein
Mariastein is a small municipality in the Kufsteinerland, at about 575 m, roughly 4 km north of Wörgl and about 11.5 km southwest of Kufstein. The village is known as a pilgrimage site.
In the centre stands Burg Mariastein, built on a rock around 1360 by the Freundsberg family. The castle is about 42 m tall and has some 250 steps. Inside are several chapels and a small museum with sacred art, objects of folk piety and portraits of former castle lords, which also tells the story of the pilgrimage.
For families, Mariastein is a compact outing that combines easily with others: a visit to the castle and museum, followed by a short walk or a trip to nearby Angerberg. From Niederau it is about 20 minutes by car via Wörgl. The stairs inside the castle are steep, so a visit is less suited to pushchairs or anyone with walking difficulties. Allow about an hour for the castle and museum. Check the opening times beforehand, as they are seasonal and may change.
