Lively Zillertal village with the Gauderfest and the Zillertalbahn
Zell am Ziller lies in the Zillertal and is a traditional village with Tyrolean-style houses and the baroque parish church of St Veit from the 18th century, whose tower and baptismal font survive from a Gothic predecessor. It is best known for the Gauderfest, a large spring and costume festival held every year on the first weekend of May, with a Sunday parade of more than 2,000 people in traditional dress.
In summer it is a pleasant stop for coffee, a stroll through the village and a visit to the church. It also lies on the Zillertalbahn route between Jenbach and Mayrhofen; check the timetable if you want to ride the steam train. Zell itself is not a big programme, so combine it with another activity in the valley.
