Zell am Ziller lies in the heart of the Zillertal and is one of the valley's best-known villages. Above it begins the Zillertal Arena, a ski area with more than 140 km of pistes that turns into walking and mountain-biking terrain in summer.
The best-known event is the Gauderfest, held for centuries on the first weekend of May and part of Austria's UNESCO intangible cultural heritage. The parade takes place on the first Sunday of May and draws around 20,000 visitors. For the festival the Zillertal Bier brewery makes the Gauderbock, a 7.8 per cent bock beer available only briefly. The brewery itself has existed for more than 500 years.
Families will find, nearby, the Rosenalm with its Spruce Castle, and the Goldschaubergwerk, which shows the region's gold-mining past. For a family from Niederau, Zell is a day trip in summer and winter; check current dates and opening times beforehand.
