Golf with a mountain backdrop: a general guide for families and beginners.
Tyrol is an attractive region for golf in summer. Courses often lie among meadows and forests, with views of mountain peaks, and at altitude the climate is cooler than in the valley. Around Kitzbühel, according to the tourist board, several courses lie close together, including the 18-hole course of Golfclub Kitzbühel-Schwarzsee-Reith, where the season runs from May to October. Kaiserwinkl Golf in Kössen is a 9-hole course, handy if you want a shorter round.
There is also plenty for those who do not yet play. Many clubs offer beginner courses, trial lessons and practice facilities, and some have smaller courses for beginners and children. That lets you try it without playing a full round. For families it can be an enjoyable activity, provided the children are old enough to listen and be patient.
The mountain golf season is fairly short: usually from spring into autumn, depending on snow and altitude. Green fees vary; one source quotes € 125 for 18 holes at Schwarzsee. Ask the club beforehand about opening times, reservations, handicap requirements and rental equipment. Which course suits you best depends on level, time and distance.

If you want to try golf, start with a trial lesson or an hour on the driving range. A professional teaches you the basics of grip, stance and swing. Clubs often rent out clubs and balls, so you need not buy anything. A full course sometimes requires proof of skill or a handicap; smaller practice courses usually do not. Dress comfortably, wear shoes with good grip and contact the club beforehand to agree a lesson or tee time, especially in peak season.
On a golf course fixed rules of conduct apply: stay quiet, repair marks in the grass and wait until the group ahead has played. Children must understand this well. In the mountains the weather can change quickly, with thunderstorms as a risk: go indoors straight away if one approaches and do not shelter under isolated trees. Wear sunscreen, as the sun is stronger at altitude, and bring water. Keep in mind walkers and animals on or beside the course.
