Auffach lies in the far reaches of the Wildschönau, at the foot of the Schatzberg. It is the base of the Schatzbergbahn, which carries skiers up in winter and walkers in summer. The village itself is small and quiet; the action is mostly on and around the mountain.
The Schatzberg belongs to Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau, so one ski pass covers the whole area. The cable car runs from about 860 to about 1,780 m. In summer the top station is the starting point for a large hiking area with alpine pastures, mountain huts and views, with easy routes for families as well as tougher tours.
For children, the water play area at Berghaus Koglmoos, by the middle station, is a fun stop: there is a water playground, a slide, a trampoline and animals. The summer cable-car season is limited and timetables change, so check beforehand. You can combine the day with Oberau or the Kundler Klamm. This makes Auffach a good choice for anyone wanting to get to know a quieter part of the valley, with small children as well as older walkers.
