Oberau is one of the four villages of the Wildschönau and lies in the middle of the valley, a few minutes from Niederau. It is the practical heart of the valley: shops, places to eat and everyday village life. If you stay in Niederau, you will often come here for groceries or a drink on a terrace.
The village has a few sights of its own. The Baroque parish church with its tall tower can be seen from afar and is a landmark of the valley. The Bergbauernmuseum z'Bach, an old farmhouse with rooms dating from 1795 and more than 1,100 objects, shows how mountain farmers once lived and worked. The Bergbadl outdoor pool is also in Oberau and is a welcome spot for children on a warm summer day.
Families can also try the walk between Niederau and Oberau: the Wirbelwindweg, a route of about 4 km with play stations in the forest and along streams. Opening times and seasons of the museum and pool vary, so check beforehand. This makes Oberau a pleasant mix of shopping, culture and an outing with children, without a long journey.
