Wildschönau

The quiet side valley where Niederau lies: farming villages, meadows and Ski Juwel.

The Wildschönau is a high valley about 24 kilometres long in the heart of the Kitzbühel Alps, with four villages: Niederau (828 metres), Oberau (936 metres), Auffach and Thierbach (1,180 metres). The valley lies among green mountain pastures and has a quiet, rural character. Farming still plays a large role: there are about 260 working farms, and the valley is known for the Wildschönauer Krautinger, a schnapps made from stubble turnips.

For families it is a pleasant base. In winter the valley belongs to Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau: about 114 kilometres of pistes with 45 lifts, 31 kilometres of them easy, and some 25 mountain huts. The Schatzberg (1,903 metres) is the mountain on the Wildschönau side. In summer there are walking and cycling routes and the Familienpark Drachental, which according to the operator is open all year.

Niederau lies at the entrance of the valley. From here the other villages are a short distance away, and the Inn valley and Alpbachtal are close as well. That makes the valley suitable for those who want peace but still plan day trips. Guests of many accommodations receive the Wildschönau Card there, with benefits; ask about it at your stay.
