Mühltal
Hamlet near Oberau, starting point for the Kundler Klamm
Mühltal is a small hamlet belonging to Oberau, on the road through the Wildschönau. The name comes from an old mill that once stood here. There are a few traditional houses and inns, and not much more: it is not a tourist centre.
Still, Mühltal is a well-known starting point for families. It is regarded as the gateway to the Kundler Klamm, a gorge along the Wildschönauer Ache between Mühltal and Kundl that is counted among the most beautiful in Austria. The route is about 7 km long, crosses wooden bridges and passes through small tunnels, and can also be done with a pushchair. The gorge is open from 1 April to mid-November and closed in winter.
If you would rather not walk, in summer the Wildschönauer Bummelzug, a slow narrow-gauge train, runs from Mühltal to the gorge entrance. A hiking route also leads up from Mühltal to Thierbach. Bring a picnic or eat in Oberau; check the Bummelzug timetable beforehand. This makes Mühltal a simple, child-friendly outing that needs little preparation and fits well into half a day.
