European Forum Alpbach
Summer Annual international conference in the Tyrolean mountain village of Alpbach
Alpbachtal
Tyrol's flower village at about 1,000 m, known for its timber buildings
Alpbach lies at about 1,000 m in a side valley of the Alpbachtal and has repeatedly been named Austria's prettiest village. Under a regulation from 1953, new buildings must be clad in wood from the first floor up, which keeps the village's uniform timber character. Flower boxes on the façades add colour in summer.
Beyond tourism, Alpbach is known for the European Forum Alpbach, which since 1945 has brought together academics, politicians and people from business and culture every August. For families it is the Wiedersbergerhornbahn that counts: at the top station (about 1,850 m) is the Lauserland play area, and you can toboggan down all year round on the Lauser-Sauser.
In Inneralpbach the Alpbacher Bergbauernmuseum shows the life of mountain farmers of the past. In winter Alpbach lies in the Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau ski area, with more than 100 km of slopes. Village and cable car make a fine day trip from Niederau; check seasons and times beforehand. This makes Alpbach a destination that works in both summer and winter, and remains worth a visit in less good weather.
About 35 minutes by car from Niederau, via the valley road to Kundl, then along the Inn Valley towards Brixlegg and up to Alpbach.
Always check times, prices and opening dates with the provider beforehand; they can change.
